「telecommunication」（名：電気通信）の略ですが、telecom だけで通信業界を指すことがあります。
語源は、tele（離れた）+ communication（連絡）です。同様に telephone は tele（離れた）+ phone（音）、television は tele（離れた）+ vision（映像）です。
